The Magician
Twice during discussion, cast Hey Presto to exchange two living seats’ resolved targeting for the following night. Immediate conversations and personal preparations stay unchanged. The non-visiting spell fails if either chosen body is dead or jailed. Twice at night, place a Protection Ward on another player to stop one basic attack without curing poison.
YOUR WIN CONDITION
Eliminate every Cult member and hostile Neutral while an Innocent survives. Executing the Martyr makes your faction lose.
A RUMOUR AT COURT
A staff, a well-thumbed tome and an expression that suggests the court has been looking at the wrong door all along.
THE ART OF PLAYING YOUR PART
How to play The Magician
You are an Innocent with two separate two-charge powers. Hey Presto commits a pair of living seats during discussion, exchanging their night targeting for the following night. Protection Ward visits another player and supplies one basic-attack shield without curing poison.
Protect a credible useful ally on the first night if the danger warrants a charge. On the following day, compare public claims before committing a swap: it redirects help as well as harm.
FROM THE LIVE GAME RULES
Your abilities
DAY ABILITY
Hey Presto
Cast a non-visiting exchange between two distinct living seats for the following night’s resolved targeting. Two uses, once per discussion day. Immediate jail/Commune conversations, personal consumables and Court Whisperer preparation stay unchanged. The spell fails if either chosen body is dead or jailed; its charge is still spent. Once cast, it persists if you later die, leave, are jailed or convert.
- Two charges; commit two different living body seats during discussion, at most once per day. Your own seat and the Ruler are legal choices.
- The accepted pair is fixed for the following night only. Targeted night effects are redirected before resolution; this power is not a visit. Either paired seat being jailed prevents the swap.
- Immediate Detain and Commune conversations keep their declared participants. Other targeted night-resolution effects are exchanged; personal consumables and Court Whisperer preparation stay with their owner.
- The already-cast day spell persists after its caster dies, is detained or converts, provided both chosen bodies remain available. The pair is private to its owner and privileged oversight; a queued commitment is not proof of success.
NIGHT ABILITY
Protection Ward
Shield another living player from one basic attack tonight. Two uses. This is a visit and never cures poison or grants a healing effect.
- Two charges. Visit another living player to shield against one basic attack. Cannot select yourself; repeat targets are permitted.
- This is not treatment: it cannot cure poison or produce a healing effect. Jail and smoke can prevent the visit.
Charge counts and ability text come from the game itself. “No charge limit” does not remove timing, targeting, or other restrictions.

A LITTLE WISDOM GOES A LONG WAY
At the table
- 01
For Hey Presto, select the first seat in the court and choose a different second seat. You may include yourself or the Ruler. An accepted daytime commitment spends one charge immediately, cannot be undone, and applies only to the following night.
- 02
This exchanges target destinations, not the characters themselves. Public seat numbers, names, portraits and account identities stay attached to their existing seats. Keep the night number alongside any claim about a swap.
- 03
Hey Presto does not count as a visit. Either selected seat being jailed prevents the swap. Your private queued-pair display is a commitment, not proof the swap will succeed.
- 04
Protection Ward has two uses, targets another living player and follows ordinary visitation, smoke and detention rules. It stops one basic attack rather than every attack in a simultaneous batch.
- 05
You can still use your night Ward after committing Hey Presto during the day. Consider where that ward will actually arrive if its chosen seat is part of a successful swap.
- 06
Detain and Commune keep the participants chosen when their immediate private conversations opened. Hey Presto redirects other targeted night-resolution effects; it does not move an existing private interview. Personal consumables and Court Whisperer preparations stay with their owner.
- 07
Once cast, the day spell remains committed even if its caster later dies, is detained or becomes Cult. Either chosen body being dead or jailed still prevents that pair from working.
Mind the trap.
- A swap can redirect a Physician away from a poisoned courtier, move an attack onto an ally, or change where investigation evidence is sampled. Treat it as a consequential decision.
- Protection Ward is shielding, not healing: it never cures Nightshade Poison or resets its countdown. A Physician, Alchemist or the victim’s Health Potion is still needed for treatment.
- Neither power protects from execution. A spent commitment is not refunded simply because detention or another obstruction prevents its effect.
- Magician claims and player claims about redirection remain unverified speech. Compare the dated private result and independent public evidence before blaming a visitor.
- Hey Presto can redirect an otherwise legal examination or Revelation onto the Ruler, potentially exposing its actual faction through the normal private-result timing. The crown remains immune to recruitment and possession.
WHEN YOU FACE THIS CLASS
Counterplay
- 01
When several reports disagree, ask which seat was chosen and which night the report describes before treating disagreement as proof of deceit.
- 02
A prisoner cannot be one half of a successful Hey Presto swap that night. Jail can stop interference but also blocks helpful visits.
- 03
A warded player remains vulnerable to existing poison, execution and multiple simultaneous basic attacks.
